John Ahern (born 10 September 1970) is a former Australian rules football player who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). In 1991, he was traded to North Melbourne for Paul Bryce. John Ahern had a largely uneventful VFL career, making his debut in round 1 of the 1989 VFL season against the Fitzroy Football Club. He had eight disposals and only played one further VFL game against Essendon in round 22 of that same season.[1]

On completion of a 5 year AFL career with Melbourne and North Melbourne football clubs, John Ahern began his career in hospitality by obtaining the lease of the Mortlake Pub TAB. The successful creation of the Hamilton Sporting Club was his first major project from conception to completion from 1994–1997.

During the next five years John managed major hospitality venues overseas and in Melbourne including the Skinny Dog Hotel, Crockford Bay Hotel and the Flower Hotel. In 2002 with a strong management background he moved into ownership, commencing with successful nightclub Aqua.

In 2008 with business partner Steve Garcia, John formed The Publican Group Australia. Currently The Publican Group’s Victorian portfolio includes Campari House, Watermark, The Wharf Hotel, The Wharf Cellars and Rivers Edge Events. Additionally, its West Australian portfolio includes The George, The Aviary and The Byrneleigh.
